news : They have fledged. At about 7.45 this morning I noticed they were getting bolder at looking out of the nestbox and then one disappeared.. I grabbed the video camera and ran into the garden and managed to capture most of the fledging with that as well as the internal camera and the fixed camera in the tree. Some were more recalcitrant than others, with the parents resorting to various degrees of bribery and coercion to get them moving. Finally htey had all emerged, most stopping briefly in the apple tree, some in the garden before heading for the pine trees in th eneighbours garden. After a few minutes they had all diappeared from view. That's all folks. It's over for another year. Same time and place next year and hopefully by then I will have worked through the hundreds of hours of video and put together a short documentary diary. news : We put mealworms out in two locations. The old bird table and the box by the sunflower seed feeder. So far the worms in the old bird table have gone, either eaten or escaped, but not the ones by the sunflower seed feeder. I'll check later to see how they are getting on. We counted a very definite nine chicks last night with potentially ten. So that would be a big clutch. Mum and dad are very busy feeding and the chicks are quite vocal. They are developing tufts of feathers on their heads that give them a somewhat punk appearance.

news : There are at least eight chicks in the nest. It is hard to get a definitive count, even on the tv monitor. I think I have seen nine (fairly sure) and possibly ten (tenuous). The chicks are developing rapidly. We can hear the chirping when mum comes in with food, both on the video link and when in the garden. So far the mealworms have not been discovered by the local wildlife. Hopefully this will change.

news : We have now got a small tele (11 quid from woolies) set up so we can monitor the box in real time. This has the additional bonus of allowing the video recorder to be programmed. The nest cup is much deeper than you might imagine. She is almost completely below the surrounding surface when she wants to be. I get the feeling that she has now got the major work done and is just smoothing off/bedding in the nest, ready for egg laying. The last few days have been pretty much the same sort of thing. Settle down on the nest and add more soft stuff.

news : We had put out some hair last winter (after cutting the childrens hair) in a ball by one of the bird tables. I caught a few pictures of the blue tit taking the last few strands of hair from the ball. The nest is probably approaching completion. Looking at the pictures of the nests from last year, the hair/wool/fluff layer goes in followed by a final layer of grass/moss over the top. I also saw the bird approaching the box with a beakfull of grass.
